Rep. Adam Putnam: To Gonzales " Resign"

Putnam is the chairman of the Republican Conference Committee and still the highest-ranking Republican official to call for Gonzales to quit. But he also is one of the strongest supporters of President Bush, who has steadfastly stood by Gonzales

In early May, Putnam called on Gonzales, a member of his own political party, to resign after Gonzales appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee to testify about the firings of eight U.S. attorneys, alleged to have been engineered in the White House and to have been politically motivated.

It was his poor performance before the committee, Putnam said, that convinced him it was time for the attorney general to step down.
